My last dog was failing for a long time but not suffering so I did everything I could to keep her as comfortable as possible. Until suddenly she went downhill fast and I had no choice. It is very much losing a member of the family. She was almost 16 but didn't show her age at all until she was over 10.

I don't have any dogs now but have 2 older cats. The cats are healthy but 12 and 14 so could start showing their age at any time.

My dog had a couple of strokes. She recovered from them until she had another one and couldn't even walk. I had to carry her outside to use the bathroom. That was when I had no choice.
