I couldn't. Last year was my first year as a single filer instead of head of household and I didn't pay enough in so I'm not sure where it's going to hit this year after changing my exemptions.

Too soon to start talking about taxes.

I've probably never paid more than 3k as head of household and owed about 7500 last year! They forgave me the penalty for not having enough paid in because it was the first year but this year I'd incur a penalty if I wasn't closer to what I owe.

If you start getting cute with deductions to have more take home you run the risk of that penalty if you owe too much at the end of the year.

I do plan but if investments make too much money you end up owing more. A better situation than losing money.

Nice on the stock gains though. I know the capital gains cap at 15% was mainly to help rich folks but middle class investors like us sure did benefit.
