So can you explain what just happened, what he was doing, for the nonmechanic in me?

He was igniting a volatile chemical inside the tire to make the tire seat on the wheel by the rapid gas expansion. It is normally done with the air device on the ground to the left in the picture. Perhaps it wasn't doing the job in the upright position with what seems to be liquid ballast already in the tire.

I am dubious of that assessment. Diesel fuel is not that easy to ignit

I agree with you, as well as the driver who sent me the pic. Whatever caused it, when the drivers realized it, they only had time to get out of the cab before it caught fire.

both drivers made it out. 2 rookies who had just come into feeders from package car. didn't have time to get anything else out, tho.

I'm fairly certain some unaddressed damage or the body shop were actually to blame.

it had been in a sideswipe accident affecting the right side. Had been in the body shop for like 6 months. only had 40,00 miles on it. Sounds like penske took that one in the shorts.

Body shops are notorious for leaving things off, loose or broken. They are NOT mechanics.

that is what the driver who sent me the pic said, and I agree. You get what you pay for, and I'm sure in this case, it was the lowest bidder.
