It's because he's miserable.
I'm a realistic type person so I'm not overly "positive" or such. So I usually call BS when I see it.

He's just an unhappy guy who probably doesn't like his lot in life and feels powerless to change so he does what he does. Gives him validation for control in some aspect.

90% of the time yes, and hes a great cook. But hes got a new project. Some old biker guy gave him a hodaka, super combat 125 1974, and hes enthralled with it, and you know, time flies when you are having fun. And I would rather see him happy than eat anyway, especially when I have beer.
