I've seen people sprinkle uncooked rice on the sidewalks for traction too...lol. Doesn't do a damn thing to.melt the ice though.

Go to any feed store and buy a bag of chicken grit. Works better than anything out there. Its chushed granite. UPS used to give us all a bag or two to use for traction if we got stuck.
