Peak season preload as a student

Hello, I normally start at 4am but I have heard horrors about around peak people starting preload at midnight. Can they force me to do this since I am a full time student or can I just say I can't start that early ? My education needs to come first.

Change your name, if that is your real name. You can talk to them but there is no guarantee. I worked preload through my senior year of college and peak wasn't that bad, I talked to my professors and they allowed me to take my final with a class later in the day so I could get a few hours of sleep. Communicate early with both sides and you might be able to find a compromise. If not, you'll find a way to power through it.

Can they make you work when you're required to work? I mean, no one can make you do anything, but you probably won't be hired for too long if you don't show up on time for peak lol

You have a tough decision to make. Yes, they start the preload early in order to try to get us drivers on the road on time. I don't mean to sound harsh but you are just a cog in a big brown delivery machine that will lumber on without you. If you decide your education comes first, Big Brown will get along without you. If you decide to tough out peak, you will make some serious coin for your education. Make up your mind soon so at least they can have a chance to train a replacement.

Yeah but I started because it was listed as 3:30-8:30 job not midnight
That makes it real easy!
You just march in to your Sup, and tell him it was advertised as 3:30-8:30 and you will not tolerate false advertising!
You do not appreciate bait & switch!
Stare right into his eyes, speak in a firm no nonsense tone, and pound your fist for emphasis to make sure he gets the point!
That will either impress him, showing you are one not to be messed with, OR, you will be escorted out after handing over your work ID.
(of course, you might to check first and make CERTAIN that the advertised times do not have any type of disclaimer "these times are subject to change to meet the volume and the needs of our Customers"

As a student myself, I know the struggle. I had the same concerns during peak last year. Making alternative arrangements "just in case" with my instructors ended up saving my butt at least once. I went to class that day, but I ended up falling asleep like 17 times in the first 11 minutes. I left as soon as I realized it was no use.

Unless you have another job, you can do it. It won't be easy, but it's possible. The great thing about preload is that you're done once the drivers are gone...unless you're a clerk or something. Just schedule your classes for 11am or later. Hopefully you don't have a ridiculous commute to contend with, too.

If you are ever looking for a normal sleep schedule boy did you pick the wrong job. We have all toughed it out with no sleep whether it was to go to school or work a second job. You can do it, you can sleep when you're dead.

Why not? Preload starts before 12 during the heaviest parts of the season at my center.

We go by the posted start time here, generally 0200 during peak. Posting a 12am start time creates problems. Not everyone can make it, not everyone is needed, and all that ot would hurt the numbers. 12am starters should be full time insiders and volunteers based on seniority, else the sups would just fill the ranks with low pay seasonals desperate to make a good impression. Five hours is all a pter is obligated to work on any given day.
