Possible driver death due to heat

I simply believe a driver with years of experience has been through many summers. They've experience their core temperature rising many times and hopefully can recognize the early stages of overheating.

That's not unrealistic.

It creeps up on you, and if you are already having a bad day, you can be in serious trouble before you realize it.

As we get older our bodies experience many changes. 20 years ago I could go almost all day without peeing. Now I'm like a dog and it seems like I'm always "marking my territory." One thing that has changed is since I quit smoking, heat doesn't bother me as much.

One of the hidden problems is that between heat exhaustion and heat stroke you experience mental confusion or unconsciousness, thereby not knowing how to take care of yourself. At that point your internal organs are starting to fail.

I had heat exhaustion one time and it was bad. Even the second day after a full nights sleep I felt awful.

That's the one thing I have learned over the years. When I start making mistakes (that I normally wouldn't do) on a hot day. I take a time out.

You get so used to pushing it,you don't always see or feel it.

Yep, first warning signs are confusion and possible dizziness. You need to stop, try to cool off, and hydrate when that happens. Hard to do at times when you are scrambling to get things done on your route.

Like being in that critical hour of making pickups when everything has to click, and you have been pushing yourself all day long. Prime opportunity right there.

Do any of you have customers who allow you to refill your water bottle/jug at their business?

Matter of fact, Dave, on all my rural routes I had places and customers where I could fill my water jugs. Either out of a cooler, a tap and even really cold water out of spring houses.

What I didn't have, that you city guys have, were air-conditioned offices, stores and warehouses to hang out in for a few minutes.

I just got really hot and sweaty all day long.

There was a natural spring about a mile from the prison that has been in the news the past two weeks. I would stop there and fill my jug up every day during the summer.

exactly . company loves sending us messages about performance. how about a message to hydrate on hot days???? its very easy to get caught up on the job and fall behind on hydrating.

some people don't realize that sometimes water alone is not enough. when your body is drained of electrolytes and you are being very physical that can affect brain function too.

dehydration is a very very DANGEROUS condition.

I feel bad for this woman. No doubt she was a short timer and counting the days. She made 25YEARS at UPS and was still on the road. That should tell you something about her right there. This job is hard for a Man to do.She was able to last this long working in the heat in NC so maybe something else was up with her. This should be a wake up call for every body how important it is to hydrate. Just a sad thing.
