Their reasons tend to be that the holidays were created by pagans in worship to pagan deities & "Christianized" by the catholic church.

I don't hold Paul in the same esteem as many Christians do, but when he was right, he was right. And he basically answered this question directly when asked about eating meat of animals sacrificed to other gods. He said it was all good as long as you weren't worshipping those gods.
