RIP Anthony Bourdain

I’ll say that the ‘selfish’ part is leaving the wife and 13 year old daughter behind.

Now those two will have to deal with Tony’s suicide for the rest of their lives.

Tony? He’s dead, his pain has ended, but he passed it on.

That seems selfish to me.
My wife's father committed suicide at 36. Left behind a wife and 4 kids. Was also a heroin addict, in and out of prison. Bourdain was a former heroin addict too. No telling what demons are in the heads of people who've hit rock bottom at some point. Read an article this evening that said a very sad side effect of celebrity suicides is it becomes like a contagion. Suicides went up 10% in the months after Robin Williams' death. Most likely if he had been clear headed enough to realize the hurt his death would cause his family, and possibly lead to others mimicking him, he wouldn't have done it. Just find it hard to believe he was in his right mind. About the only ones who seem clear headed taking their life are the terminally ill who are in great pain or soon will be.

Would you? I mean you would have to care some about trying to accomplish something, but that doesn't necessarily mean you care about living or dying.
But wouldn't you want to live so that you could accomplish the something? It's a paradox...

No, because if the thing you are trying to accomplish requires that you risk your life, it's probably not an endeavor you would undertake if you cared about living. If you take the risk you know there's a chance you will die, in which case your goals and aspirations cease to mean anything. If you succeed, you live and possibly accomplish the thing you set out to do. I present, as a hypothetical, the movie "Short Time" starring Dabney Coleman. In this case he is actually trying to die, but I think the risk tolerance would be about the same, if not the motivation.

But even in real life, there are plenty of examples of people who would rather live, but risk their lives anyway in the pursuit of greatness. And there are almost as many examples of people who failed and died. If you don't care if you live or die, you might as well go out in a blaze of glory...

I knew four people who killed themselves last year. It is an an incredibly selfish act, IMO.

So ...
This seems to point to a difference between you and me.

You, in a group think mode with little weight to the individual, feels that an individual must consider his/her actions in relation to how it affects others.

I, in an individualist mode with little (probably zero) weight towards groups, feels that beyond responsibility to their children's financial welfare, has very little responsibility to how it affects others.

PS. - the current theory/rumor why Tony committed suicide is his wife's philandering. I don't know if I accept her crocodile tears for Tony.
