At least the acknowledgement afforded me at 25 years. How many non feeder drivers go their entire career accident free?
That is an amazing accomplishment. Congrats. I would have worked 2 and half more years if I were accident free to get in that Honor Circle. However had several in yard small accidents. One on road.

an absolute *ing disgrace of a human being.
You couldn't be more wrong.
Adjustment of the handbrake is part of the pretrip.
I recall one morning we departed the Center super late, like delivering Airs with Ground late. I dragged an old standard 6-speed mall van (International 4700) halfway across NYC with the parking brake still engaged. I didn't even notice until I pulled up to the first bulk stop (Barnes & Noble).

I'm stalling and smoking up Park Avenue, thinking "What the hell is that smell?"

So no, the parking brake doesn't guarantee the car won't move. What does, however, is the mindset of "expecting the unexpected" and having a routine i.e. cover brake, clutch in, transmission in neutral, engage handbrake, stop engine, key in ring ringer, gear in L1, release brake pedal, check for movement, remove seatbelt, fold mirror.

This is the depth in which your vision should be, if you want this job.

I had a stop on a slight slope, as far as I know, I did my normal park and hand brake routine. I turn around after delivering, this #$%*%^$# truck is rolling back towards the right, into a yard crushing a mailbox. Its the worst nightmare dream-like experience I can't even explain. I just got reinstated after someone backed into my truck while I was out doing a delivery, now this.

What I can't fathom is how we are not drilled about checking the tightness of our hand brakes every day. It should be in our diad and there should be a daily routine check by mechanics that have signatures. I've never been told anything about tightening or loosening the handbrake. We are behind these trucks countless times doing deliveries, how are we not reminded to check this every day like we are told everything else, use horns, feet on pavement, etc.

I could have been killed, someone else could have been, this could have been absolutely devastating. I have some questions for a lawyer. How can the DOT not require management to regularly quiz us on handbrake checks? When we got back to the center, my sup tested the brake and it rolled in drive with the brake up. He showed me how to tighten it. Ive never been shown this. Ive never heard anyone talk about this ever.:sad::sad:
This is how liberals view the world and why we have signs telling people to be careful.

Assuming you're not just joking, I'm never happy to see someone fired. You have a pretty good chance of getting your job back though, so good luck.
I realized I never had a 30-day training packet. Since they reinstated me with a seniority date, I didn't have to go through another qualification period so I guess they just said screw it and wait for something to go wrong so they could can me. But this experience definitely helps me understand the areas I needed improvement on and why a more self-reliant attitude is critical. If I get it back ill be all the better for it.

I for one

The only thing I ever expected of them was a paycheck on Friday and not once in over 30 years did they ever let me down

Wasn’t interested in the bar-s hotdogs or a half assed handshake from the guy that tried to fire me

they'll claim they did teach you how to tighten it and that you "forgot". happened to me. so I don't even ask questions anymore because no point in arguing. if you have any questions ask one of the veteran drivers.

plus you can easily check handbrake by just pulling it up while in drive and seeing if the truck actually moves at all.
i used it all day at stoplights and couldn't go unless I put it down. makes no :censored2:ing sense. as much as this is horrible, however, I'm learning so much I just really didn't know. and probably would have never found out. which is really scary. they never did my 30-day training packet.

Part on order, ok to drive
Some of the new automatic package cars have a wierd type of transmission that will roll away just like a manual. You most likely didn't have it in park. The e-brake is useless on a slope in these new cars. To any normal person this would be a defect but some idiot decided the cost savings was worth it.

is it some sort of hybrid? All our PCs are either Allison equipped or if it’s a Ford it has the 6R140.. both are conventional automatic transmissions.

It was mentioned earlier that it was a possibility that the shift lever may not have been fully engaged in Park and may have slipped to Drive. I contended that while it may have shifted to Neutral that I highly doubted that it could have shifted in to Drive. Who is correct?

it would slip out into what would be reverse if the engine is running. Without the engine running there is no pressure to activate solenoids because the pump is not turning and the converter is not spinning

Sorry to hear you lost your job. Hard to find a job with the benefits UPS provides. I went 34 years and it just got harder and harder every year to keep corporate off your back. Hopefully they will give you a chance to work inside pt to keep your benefits until you can try again. Good luck to you.
