Seeking some advice..

Brownslave688

You want a toe? I can get you a toe.
Why? The use of cover drivers/casuals helps during volume surges as it allows the PDS to add extra routes as needed. On slower days, the casuals will either cover for FT drivers who are on vacation or want the day off or they will not work that day.
We do just fine without them. It's unneeded we already have seasonals for half the year.

This is how you end with places that have 10-15 year cover drivers.

My first advice would be to change your avatar.you basically have put yourself on front street for all to know and see,not smart.so you have been employed by ups for a little over one whole year and ur frustrated already,u should move on this job is not for you.

Okay, avatar changed..Didn't realize how big of a deal that was..& I can handle this job, it's just the whole waiting process that sucks. Before I left work this morning, one of the bosses asked me if I had my browns with me..Of course, told him I did & would be ready following the preload if they needed me to go out..Sure enough, they didn't need me. I'm not trying to just sit here & complain or ask for any sympathy from anyone. I know this turns into a great career, years down the road. The more I think about it, I don't want to look back years from now & wish that I stayed. Most days I do get discouraged and overwhelmed, but I show up every day & bust my ass to the point where I can barely walk by the end of my usual 4 hour shift. My pic says "Brown To The Bone" & anyone that knows me would tell you that I'm exactly that. I'll continue to suck it up & persevere, one day at a time. One day, these old timers will start riding off into the sunset & my time will eventually come. Thanks to all that showed somewhat positive feedback & best of luck this coming peak.

Not really. I worked at a casino for 6 years (from the ages of 18-24) worked my way up through 3 departments. I then left (a few months before I got hired in @UPS,) to try something different. Had some bumps in the road along the way, but at this point I feel my best option is to just try and stick it out. I just get real discouraged some days is all. Some of these guys are at 8-12 years now, and aren't even full time yet..

I started at age 22 and went full-time at age 26, turning 27. I would say 5-8 years and a good attitude and you'll have the job. But any longer than that, probably hanging on too long (age 32ish).

The real question is, do you really want it? FT driving gig is not going to improve in the long-term, jmo. :p

My advice to you is to not wish your life away by worrying about the future instead of making the most of each day. More money isn't everything.

Enjoy the fact that you are young and healthy. We were all in your shoes many years ago. Most of us look back at that time fondly when we had more free time and less responsibility.

In a few years you will be whining about working too much like the rest of us.

I was a PT cover driver for about 6 years and I think I only didn't drive 1 year and that was the year after the '97 strike. After that I worked every day that I wasn't on vacation and working 50+ hours a week.

I was selling my vacations to the co at that time... lol

Oh Yeah
Just have patience and keep plugging away at it Youngblood. Youll get there, patience and perseverance my man. It almost don't make any sense in starting too early anyway because this job changed from a 30 year job to a 10 to 15 year job and 20 if your extremely lucky. Most of the guys you see in the hub and that are on here who have a lot of years in, were here when the job was a lot easier and are here now when the job is hard as hell on you physically. No way nowadays that somebody can do this job for more than 20 years tops with the physical beating we all endure on an everyday basis. The longer you wait the better chance you have at making that magic retirement age whatever it is in your local. Good luck and be patient and youll be fine.

Thanks, Macho Man..No sense in leaving now, after all that I've already accomplished. Looking forward to seeing how I feel about things, after driving my first peak season. "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!
