Our concepts of what we call God are not recent ideals but rather trace back many, many millennia to cultures far removed from us. Our God today may hold a new name and face but this God still holds the same abilities, characteristics and power as the previous God(s) we might know under another, much older name. Or, that is assumed to be the case.

Many of us, maybe most of us, hold a belief in a God that does not originate from within our own culture but rather is borrowed from another. We've grown to accept the supremacy of this new and model God over and as opposed to what our ancient ancestors believed. And most of that is a result more of conquest than anything else. Take the Roman Empire out of the picture and it's very possible Northern Europe for example would still worship Odin, sing of Valhalla at sporting events and gather in groves of trees to worship some Celtic Mother goddess among other things.

But it begs the question(s), in the Old Testament texts where we read the translated word "god" or "gods", what did these ancient people believe and what can we glean from the native language (from which our translations arrive) and the definition it entails? And in the case of gods, how many and just who were they and what did they mean to these ancient peoples? Finally, does our ideal of God follow in the same manner as those of ancient times? Is our God today truly the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, thus Moses, Joshua or even David? What about the God of the earliest Christians whose writings were excluded from Orthodoxy such as the gnostic writings from the Library and Nag Hammadi?

Boring and pointless.

It's pretty sad (yet hilarious) when someone renders an entire, rather lengthy, post as irrelevant in the first sentence. Space alien? Your hate can be quite comical. If not downright sad.

What else would a "Sky God" be if not an Alien? He didnt live on earth, as he didnt create it yet.

If he didnt live on earth, then he would be an alien, living somewhere in space camp.

You know the place, the one where he "decends" from the "Heavens" to give us humans his great advice.

TOS.

You seem to be rather convinced about something you claim to not even believe in. So very interesting.

So where and how did western so-called monotheism arrive at the God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam? Using the 1993' celebrated work of Karen Armstrong titled, "A History of God, The 4000 Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam" the video below uses Armstrong's work and is condensed into a 15 minute presentation which might offer some food for thought. The History Channel among others often broadcasts the original documentary entitled "A History of God" which Armstrong appears and uses her work as a basis for the presentation. Well worth the watch regardless your view of god.

In the video below, the discussion of what are terms "J", "E", "P" and "D" sources refer to the 19th century Documentary Hypothesis, sometimes called the Wellhausen Hypothesis. Named after the Christian theologian and bible scholar Julius Wellhausen, this approach to the bible has aided scholars and contextual scholarship to actually date the portions of the bible to when they were written. The same creator of the video below also covers this scholarship elsewhere as a part of this larger video series under the heading of "The Bible Pt. 2" which you can find at the YouTube Channel listed.

ISIS Releases New Baghdadi Message Calling for ‘Every Muslim to Fight in His Land’

In the speech, Baghdadi calls on “every Muslim in every place to perform hijrah to the Islamic State or fight in his land, wherever that may be.”

“Do not think the war that we are waging is the Islamic State’s war alone. Rather, it is the Muslims’ war altogether. It is the war of every Muslim in every place, and the Islamic State is merely the spearhead in this war. It is but the war of the people of faith against the people of disbelief, so march forth to your war O Muslims,” he says. “March forth everywhere, for it is an obligation upon every Muslim who is accountable before Allah. And whoever stays behind or flees, Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) will be angry with him and will punish him with a painful torment.”

“Islam,” he adds, “is the religion of war.”

Wow, an atheist explains God. Who could predict the conclusions?

Technically, it's an atheist using a theist, former nun/now theologian who actually believes in god, to explain god.

My guess is however such is absolutely meaningless to you. In fact, I really don't have to guess! ;)

I won't disagree that Islam is full of contradictions, but so is every other religion I can think of. And, your "Muslim" President just knocked-off another ISIL leader yesterday, one among hundreds he has taken out. So, if he's a Muslim, he's in big trouble.

Obama is a Christian, and that makes him an enemy to all Muslims of the jihadist bent. He has consistently been killing the leaders of radical Islam, yet you give him little to no credit.

Also, Millenials are abandoning Christianity in record numbers, along with religion in general. Although Christians are still a vast majority (8 out of 10 people claim to be Christian), that statistic has dropped to 7 out of 10, and is declining rapidly. It won't be long before that number is 5 out of 10. This is all bad news to Conservatives, who are also facing a "browning" of America.
