Government funding is the problem. Stupid people think loans are free money, colleges keep spending on stuff knowing the government cash will keep rolling in. Forgiving loans only shifts the cost to someone else. Government has no money to give away, they only take.

Simple bribery for votes. I would counter his philosophy with a set of ads. Focus on the farmer, the store owner, the union worker, etc, showing outrage at them having to pay for someone else's college.
forgiving loans shift the cost to the govt. govt creates money dont forget. if govt didnt fund roads or schools average people couldnt afford it im sure.
Is it free money? Where do the forgiven loans go?

If government didn't do it the free market would create an opportunity for the private sector to do it and they would do it a hundred times better.
privatized is not always cheaper than govt. privatized wants to maximize profits, govt doesnt have to do that.
in addition, govt keeps costs for businesses down because govt handles the costs. it gives a competitive advantage over a country that doesnt subsidize it.

Plenty of people worked their way through college. Of course, it was a lot easier when college's were a whole lot less fancy.

Baloney. Harvard has the world's largest endowment. About $60 billion if I remember right. Costs about $90k a year to attend. Professors make hundreds of thousands a year. The cost of a university education nationwide has far exceeded inflation in annual increases for decades. Student loans are part of it as the government backs ridiculous amounts so the schools kept jacking up the cost.
The government has produced some great inventions but it's the private sector that took those inventions and perfected them. Left up to the government you'd still be looking at a huge desktop computer that's slow.
