That happens in Mass all the time in the summer. When I used to ride I carried a small steel plate with me which in July/August would still sink a bit into the pavement and mess it up a bit, but wouldn't tip the bike over.

Doesn't even have to be a steel plate you can take a beer can and make a little plate.

Yeah I've used a crushed can before. You have to be careful if there's any incline though cuz they're slippery.
