My understanding is that S-300 rockets are built to self-destruct in air if there's no impact with a target unless the system has been converted for ground attacks. Which only Russia has done.

Now that the Russians have lost Kherson, an eventual humiliating loss to Ukraine is a certainty. This is Russia's chance to make it appear that they were pushed out of Ukraine by NATO rather than by the Ukrainians alone.
