So Californians would be willing to have the lifestyle of the French and Brazilians? I think residents need to think all that through very, very carefully. More so than Brexit voters did.
No, we'd be willing to have the lifestyle of Californians.

Silicon Valley, LA and $50 billion in ag products not including weed. I think we would be ok.
Do you believe you would keep the same standard of living? If so, why? Why would you compare the economy of California to France and Brazil and yet expect the standard of living to remain considerably higher?

This whole idea reminds me of the soccer parents convinced their kids is being held back by the rest of the team and not understanding how the team develops as a whole.

But they are not you, nor I. What we want/think is meaningless. But I do respect their expression of autonomy and daring to have a larger conversation that most cower from. No expectation it goes anywhere but this type conversation seems to be growing these days, regardless right or left.

From my POV I just like the fact such conversations are taking place. Puts pressure on the Status Quo which is a good thing.

So this is about you and not about them.

Brazil has a population of 200 million. California has 39 million. A lot less people to feed, house and protect for the same size economy.

No. It is a comparison of what looks like looking at one side of an equation and ignoring the other.

It's like adding or subtracting from only one side of an equation and expecting the relationship to remain the same. Or pretending that for every action there is not an equal but opposite reaction.

Soccer and parenthood just seem like more easily related to by most. Personally I don't care what they do. I'm in "flyover country".

You might care if the worlds 6th largest economy was to leave the US.

Good point. Those who question how California would thrive on its own, I wonder why these same people don't argue we should rejoin England because we can't survive. And where is the Team Spirit on our part in kicking England to the curb?

Defense, infrastructure, foreign relations, immigration, federal, state, local government. A lot changes and who's to say that vibrant economy of Silicon Valley even stays in the Republic of California to support it.

It's an interesting idea with a lot of "what ifs" to ponder.

I would accept your explanation had only the first paragraph been posted as they were legit questions and concerns. But the moment you dropped the "T" word into the "collective" mix, it became something else and thus my point.

Silicon Valley could move anywhere right now but chooses to remain in California. They aren't going anywhere.

Very true and the picture of how it is done is wide open with both positive and negative potentials.

As to the first paragraph, how do vastly smaller countries do such things?

France has a population of 64 million. Is there a reason you went with Brazilian population of 200 million? Wouldn't France be a better comparison?
