They did not have much to erode unless you consider a bunch of scattered tribes that all had varying cultures and languages as one. But even if I humor your point it still doesn't hold up because that would mean that citizens of another country are allowed to circumvent the immigration laws of another simply because that country had wronged someone in the past. And that is a foolish stance to take.
