The phrase 'illegal alien' has no real meaning under the law. The status of being present in the United States without a visa is not an ongoing criminal violation.
I thought so. Guess @sportello is way too smart for me.Isn't that what illegal means?
Once again, the term 'refugee' has a specific meaning under the law. It has nothing to do with immigration. How is he confusing the two? He simply said that we can kick out the illegal aliens to help refugees.

Bingo! And thank you.How is he confusing the two? He simply said that we can kick out the illegal aliens to help refugees. I'm sure he knows the difference between legal and illegal immigrants. He may not feel the need to write a novel to get his point across like some long winded people on here do.
Really? Keep digging. I'm starting to enjoy this. The phrase 'illegal alien' has no real meaning under the law. The status of being present in the United States without a visa is not an ongoing criminal violation.

Not here legally = illegal. Are you a US citizen? No. Then alien. Illegal + alien = illegal alien. More accurate than using a deceptive politically correct term like "undocumented".
Being present in the USA without a visa is not necessarily a criminal violation. It may be a civil infraction, or there may be circumstances that would make their presence perfectly acceptable. To say someone is 'illegal' means that you have convicted them without a hearing.

Civil infraction, not criminal. There is only a monetary fine, no jail time. It's like a parking ticket, not a burglary.Infraction is against the law and therefore illegal.
