I took my wife to see Amicalola Falls the other day, we spent the night in the Lodge there. We visited cousin the next day. He lives in Clarksville of all places.

This is the Southern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail just below Springer Mountain. The last time I went backpacking was to the top of that mountain, it's a difficult hike carrying a full pack. A thunderstorm hit that night and a limb fell on my tent and bloodied my ear. Luckily I had been drinking some 12 year single malt scotch with my doctor before the storm so it didn’t hurt at the time.

a very familiar place. The starting point for that crazy long 2,200 mile hike to Mount Katahdin. Hopefully one day I’ll be posting a pic of the finish line

I figured you started at this end. We stayed at The Lodge the other night. A few photos from my ventures up there. The guy eating the Blue Bunny Mint Chocolate Ice cream had just finished the whole 2000-mile hike. A view from the top of Spring Mt. where the marker is. And my campsite where the tree limb tried to kill me later on.

Yep. I got to touch the marker at Springer and stayed at the shelter. Made it to Hot Springs in NC so far and have had to have another neck surgery which has held me up. But I’m not done yet. A long way to go..... what kind of tent were you using?

I can't remember what brand that tent is, I bought it about 25 years ago when I was a BSA leader. I slept in it for a week with my son in Yellowstone back in 2000. We used to buddy up with one person toting the tent and the other carrying the stove and food. I still have it in my attic along with some cooking stuff if SHTF.

I was camping in that area and had a little backpack tent that didn't have an internal frame like better dome tents. I had the problem the soil was too thin to put stakes in the ground to support it. I got a good dome tent soon after that.

I remember camping on top of Blood Mountain hiking part of the Appalachian Trail and we basically had bare rock near the shelter where we pitch our tents. Instead of using stakes in the ground we tied the corners to rocks.

Normally all this is under about 50 feet of water. That little bridge sits at the bottom of the lake but It's hardly rained at all this year. I'm told it's been almost thirty years since the last time you could see it.
