Did they set something on fire?
looting and burning no doubtDid they set something on fire?
Funny you should ask. Was fishing the Fall River across from our Airbnb just a couple miles east of RMNP and a hiker walks by me and says there's a bear cub about 100 yards downstream. Didn't want to get between mama and junior so headed for the hot tub.See any bear or sign?

Smart.
I've only been out there once. My college roommate and I hooked last year after 40 years. Met in Denver and drove over 6,000 miles in 2 weeks. It's unbelievable out there. We did a bunch of hikes everywhere. Lot of miles, lotta walking. Bear spray was our friend. Never seen any but plenty of sign. We regretted not wettin' a line.
So, we're catchin' Brookies in east Tennessee this past spring and before we know it's gettin' dusk. Time to head back. There he is. 250-300 lb. black bear in a tree watching us go by. No spray. Remember now...don't run, face him, look bigger than you, etc.
That thing dropped about 15 ft out of that tree, and both of us took off running and screaming. I never looked back but I was waitin' for the teeth and claws. Yep, my pal was ahead of me.
Have encountered a few black bears while backpacking the back country out here. Usually they're in just as much of a hurry to get away from us but we always try to make some noise on trail as to not surprise them & I do carry bear spray. Just not a good idea to hang around if a cub is in the area. To be honest I'm more concerned about the Mountain Lions out here. Have not seen one yet but hear of other hikers being stalked by them.Smart.

Made me think of this video of a thru hiker name Dixie on her through hike of the CDT..... I do a lot of backpacking here on the east coast and potential threats are nothing like out your way. I did have an encounter with wild boar on the Smokies but other than that the biggest scares are snakes and black bears lolHave encountered a few black bears while backpacking the back country out here. The only time I carry out here is when I'm hiking the backcountry. Have seen some video of cats following hikers hundreds of yards on trail. Cat stalks me and I'm hitting it right between the eyes. Will deal with Colorado Parks and Wildlife after the fact.Made me think of this video of a thru hiker name Dixie on her through hike of the CDT.....
