(Politico) — As states across the nation ramp up their efforts to catch illegal immigrants, the Obama administration on Thursday launched a new free hotline for people busted on violations to get help.

The hotline, run by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, is available 24/7 for detained individuals to phone if they think they “may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime.”

The hotline will have translation services available in several different languages. ICE personnel will gather the caller’s information and send it to a field office for immediate action, according to the press release.

The purpose of the hotline and other measures, including a new detainer form, are “to ensure that individuals being held by state or local law enforcement on immigration detainers are properly notified about their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights.”

WICHITA (AP) — A Wichita man who has lived illegally in the United States for 22 years is fighting what his attorney says would be a lifetime expulsion from the country. Manuel Amparan-Mendoza faces sentencing Jan. 18 for using fraudulent documents. Federal guidelines call for a maximum six-month sentence.
But prosecutors are seeking a sentence of a year and a day, which would make his conviction an aggravated felony, resulting in automatic deportation and a lifetime ban from the U.S.
In a court filing Wednesday, Amparan-Mendoza’s attorney said the result would be inconsistent with President Barack Obama’s immigration policy. He calls the Mexican immigrant a simple man who has worked hard to support his family.
The government argues Amparan-Mendoza used the identities of U.S. citizens to work, open bank accounts and buy a home.

The government used these census numbers to reapportion seats in the House of Representatives and, as a result, the State of Louisiana lost a House seat to which it was entitled. BLM operation nets 7.5 tons of garbage near border
The Arizona Bureau of Land Management has completed its fourth anti-smuggling operation and brought in a good haul from a popular corridor used by smugglers and illegal immigrants.
During these operations, BLM brings additional law enforcement rangers to state-owned land to clean-up the area, confiscate any drugs left behind and possibly arrest any suspicious persons found in the area.
The most recent operation was called Operation ROAM (Reclaim Our Arizona Monuments) and focused on the Ironwood Forest and Sonoran Desert National Monuments.

The operation pulled out 7.5 tons of trash from both monuments and saw 228 law enforcement events, including the seizure of nearly 4,000 pounds of marijuana and the arrests of 223 suspected illegal immigrants.
Crew members reported finding just about everything, but said cell phones were very popular. One found an automatic rifle, complete with loaded clips.
Most of the trash was found near Interstate 8, but Melinda Mahoney, a BLM park ranger, said it looks like things are getting better.
“I think we’re making a difference,” she said in a press release. “We’re hearing from the rangers, especially those that are returning from last year, that it looks a lot cleaner.”

I find it amuzing myself when people like you say silly things about immigration. As if 12 million mexicans are walking across the desert every year.... You havent the first clue on immigration or its root causes other than the HYPE you hear from your favorite TALKING HEADS.

Heres a little FYI for you to digest.

First, lets deal with facts. According to the latest HOMELAND SECURITY DEPARTMENT:

41% of all illegal aliens come to america on tourists visas and overstay the visa and become illegal. This means they simply get off planes and buses, pick up their luggage and go to their new homes.
19% of all illegal aliens come to america on student visas and overstay the visa and become illegal, just ask Michele Malkins parents.
15% of all illegal aliens come to america on GUEST WORKER VISAS and overstay the visa and become illegal.

That represents 75% of the illegal immigration problem. Leaving 25% for the remainder of illegal aliens, but wait, you have to divide that 25% by the northern canada border (9%), then the east coast (7%) leaving 9% for california, arizona, new mexico and texas combined. Then , you have to divide that 9% by 4 leaving a whopping 2.25% for each state respectively.

All this nonsense about arizona and they only represent 2.25% of illegal crossings each year.

But wait, how did thousands of mexicans get into arizona then if its only 2.25% each year???

That easy, just ask ANY REPUBLICAN IN THE SENATE, especially JOHN McCAIN or Mitch McConnell.. Its called THE GUEST WORKER VISA. ARIZONA is its own problem, it issues close to a million guest worker visas each year and those workers NEVER LEAVE THE STATE and return to MEXICO.

Jan Brewer only has JAN BREWER to blame for it. Its the REPUBLICANS who keep calling for MORE GUEST WORKER VISAS TO BE ISSUED knowing FULL WELL those workers will NEVER GO HOME.

The excuses you just made are just that, EXCUSES in the form of TALKING POINTS. Why not try FACTS for a change?

Why not truly understand that even if you built DUAL 100 foot walls with electricity running at the top, attack dogs in between, the marines on our side of the walls, you would NOT MAKE A DENT in ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION??

YOU would only be affecting 2.25% of the problem and spent TRILLIONS on security, while 75% of the illegal aliens fly overhead in an airplane shouting down as they fly over "meda esto pendejos en la tierra"

This is the real immigration problem. VISAS. We have no logical mechanism to address the overstayed visa or MICHELE MALKIN wouldnt be a citizen today.

It is amazing how an uber left wing zealot can sit there and tell someone they don't know what they are talking about. I have lived 59 years in a border state. Most of that time was spent with in 100 miles of the Mexican border. I don't need some uber left wing zealot to tell me about immigration statistics.

I have actually experienced the landscape of my communities change due to illegal immigration. Zealots on the right or the left get in the way of the rest of the country from dealing with important issues that moderate thinkers on the right and the left need to deal with. The reason we can't make progress in dealing with issues is because of these factions. They talk louder than the other 80%.

An uber left wing zealot would have you believe that all Republicans are bigots, racists, religious fanatics, haters, and the cause of all of Americas problems... I could go on and on. These zealots have hate and contempt for those people who do not share their views. They are the same people who talk of "Peace".

Fortunately, a reasonable person with liberal or conservative views knows how these zealots think and act and realize that if things are going to get done, reasonable people will need to come together to fix the issues that affect America. A reasonable person also knows that if we are going to make America a better place we will have to discount the thought process of zealots and work within the framework of the other 80% of the American ingenuity that brings diverse solutions to fruition.

Let there be no mistake. Diversity provides strength.

My frustration is this: We need strong, powerful, dynamic leaders who realize that the strength in America is bringing diverse thinking, ideas and compromise to solutions that will stand the test of time. Kind of like our Founders did when they came up with the Constitution.
