I used them fairly often, particularly out on rural roads where the starboard side of the truck is right up against thick trees or bushes, or the road drops right off into a steep ditch.

Past few weeks I've been in a rental more than a PC. Only difference I see is that the drivers slow down for a package car but go balls to the wall if they see a Penske.

One way street and the stop is on the drivers side. Don't want to step out into traffic.

There's always a reason now and then to use the driver's side, but I find it's pretty rare. I probably do it 1 or 2 times a week on average. In the winter I will more often so I don't have to step into a snow bank.

Why are you worried about saving steps? You get paid by the hour. You want to get killed by someone texting while driving. Why would you exit the package car into oncoming traffic?
