So what's the official word on exiting and entering thru the driver side door of a package car? I get different answers from different ORSs.

I used them fairly often, particularly out on rural roads where the starboard side of the truck is right up against thick trees or bushes, or the road drops right off into a steep ditch.

There's always a reason now and then to use the driver's side, but I find it's pretty rare. I probably do it 1 or 2 times a week on average. In the winter I will more often so I don't have to step into a snow bank.

Saves a few steps. But I can also see the down side of exiting driver side and becoming someone's hood ornament.
Why are you worried about saving steps? You get paid by the hour. You want to get killed by someone texting while driving. Why would you exit the package car into oncoming traffic?
