To be bound to one location, being talked to as if you are owned, whipped across the back if you don't jump to it, living in a shack with threadbare c!othes while the master lives in the big mansion, not being able to read or write, basically being kept like a mule for labor, having your children taken from you and sold to others, yeah, they are much better off today.

It's been about 20 years since I've read extensively about Rome. But any society built on conquering and dominating other groups has fatal flaws that ultimately unravel.

They stopped conquered after Trajan. From Hadrian on it was maintaining the borders. Prior to that they even treated the slaves better, since the trade had dried up.
