I have been hired for a Package Handler Job, Part Time, Perm. I have been through orientation and have been waiting for a call to start the job. It has been a month now. Anyone out there have any advice for me? Called HR a couple of weeks ago and was told I haven't been forgotten about.

They won't call until they absolutely must have one more worker.

Thank You... How crazy is that? I am a 30 year retiree from the Phone Co world so I do not need the job thank God. I feel bad for these people who really do. Do you start paying your union dues from the date of hire? How about seniority? How does that work? Appreciate it!

Union dues normally do not start until you have passed your 30 day probation period. You may have to pay an initiation fee, which would be taken out of your checks in equal amounts until paid off. Seniority would be based on your hire date but is not a bid deal in the PT ranks. You will need to work for at least 5 years to be vested in the pension.

When it comes close to Peak let them know that you would either like to double shift in the hub or work as a Peak helper on road.

Hmmm interesting. I'm only 50 so working another 5 years is not a problem for me. I'm just in awe that your seniority date is the date of hire. So I have a month seniority, haven't worked and haven't paid Union Dues. Excellent! I love this job!! What is double shift and peak helper on the road jobs?

Hate to break it to you, until you start working you have no seniority yet.

Then, it takes a minimum of 30 days to gain seniority. Hopefully they hired

you as permanent, if not you are seasonal or vacation replacement.

Here, you start paying dues 30 days after hiredate. You may be a couple months behind before you even start.

So first 30 days you pay union dues plus initiation fees but you do not start seniority accumulation? They did hire me permanent. I was an IBEW member for 30 plus years so how Teamsters works is all new to me. It was pretty vague at orientation and like I said I have not heard from anyone. I would think the union would be on the company to move along people for their financial benefit.

Great pay?

During your orientation, did they walk you through the building while work was in progress?
Yes they did. I'm not scared of the work at all. I've worked for 30 years plus at the Phone Co I only retired because I was traveling 1 1/2 hours each way to work. I certainly wasn't ready to retire but I also wasn't relocating to keep that job. With the Phone CO after 30 years at any age you can draw your pension with no penalties. I have worked in garages...around trucks.
