Many houses have gates you need to open to get to the house. Those you need to open unless you see a dog loose. You never hop the fence or try to get past a locked gate though.

Definitely make a lot of noise if there is a gate. Situation determines if you go into gate or just leave it at gate.

You get to know the area and learn what houses are risky. Many will have dogs inside the house or in the back yard but the front will be safe. Unless the idiot customer opens their front door and lets the dog out. Which can happen whether or not there is a gate.
