It all depends on for whom Briggs is producing the engine.

Some are really good and will last for ever with a little care. Others, the discount store models, good luck after a year or two.
I had an old one. Beat to hell and back. Gave it to my dad. He ran it dry on oil.
Put some fresh oil in and turned the blade by hand. I think that was the best it ever ran.

Same with the Honda small engines. Lots of Chinese clones.
