Asking directly for what you want is the opposite of desperate.

It all depends on the situation. Granted my choice of the word 'desperate' may not exactly fit here but to use other words, he looks 'needy', or he has no supposed "girlfriend/wife" and the traditional ways to pick up a lady haven't worked for him in the past. I really don't know
