While the software is stupidly named, because it gives the public the idea the car can drive itself, that is not at all the case if you RTFM. Tesla's software is written to ignore stationary objects, they are the responsibility of the person behind the steering wheel. It only recognizes objects that are moving in the same direction as the car. That is why they only recommend using the system on divided one-way highway systems, with exits. As a result, any pedestrian standing in the road will get run over. This has been already explained in court, and Tesla won the 10-20 cases, because the drivers didn't read the manual or understand how the system works, and they ignored the warnings.
Many of these accidents were YouTubers showing off what the software could do, without understanding anything about how it works... Until they slammed into a stationary object at highway speeds. PBS Frontline did a show that explains exactly this situation, and I suspect Nader & that group trying to ban Teslas latched on to the situation after hearing the details. Tesla won in court so far, because people do stupid things with the cars, but this group knows they can use public outrage and suspicion to steamroll Tesla into changing or eliminating the software.
My opinion is, people are far too stupid to be trusted to pay attention, when using the software. (Especially, after seeing videos of two dozen of them slamming into objects at highway speed, and resulting in their own fatality.) A couple went underneath tractor-trailers that pulled onto the highway in front of them, and we're not just decapitated, but their head and upper body were completely obliterated!
