I am also inclined to believe that people don't care what they're drinking when they are "well drunk", but when you are completely sober about to have your first drink you notice more if it's good or not. Is this a silly thought?

Very true, it was once explain to me if I believed a believer should drink, and a pastor told me not if you feel it’s going to lead the person you’re with astray. Nor if it’s your idol, in other words it’s the only thing you can think about doing when you’re doing nothing else.

I think you are already “your own disciple”, you just choose to filter your rationalization through Christianity. You’re gonna do what you adapted to do until you pay some prices and have to readapt to the trauma. Hopefully you had a good upbringing and don’t have to pay some heavy prices to be put on the same page as the rest of society.
