When pensions were overfunded the government allowed companies to skim off the excess but when they later ended up underfunded the employees got screwed.

They need to change the rules on that.

The bonus payment is a smart option.
Pension funds can not be overfunded because if they are the company can suspend contributions.

I swear it's like the government wants these things to fail.

Just like when our fund was starting to decline They wasn't allowed to make any cuts because it didn't decline steep enough.

There is no contract language for the COLA increase. Our pension fund is very well managed and the board is looking at ways to share it with those of us retired. The bonus this year is just a start.

Well they're going to start offering annuities in 401ks, so if people want to choose an investment option that's as terrible as pensions they'll get that opportunity I guess.

Annuities are horrible idea
They do not have to follow the same rules as mutual funds and pension plans and the fees are ridiculous

The people who are close to retirement and can't easily switch plans are the ones left in the cold. Unless companies transfer their accrued pension credits into individual retirement accounts (ROFL).
