Seniority changes with Workday

So, long story short, I am an express employee trying to transfer to another state. I am a full-time courier at the moment, and was attempting to transfer to a part-time Hub position. To my shock, I was told by the hiring manager that I rank dead last in the rankings as far as hiring for the position goes, even though I have been with Fedex for 5+ years, all of that being full-time.

Here is what the manager told me, after he double checked with a supposedly knowledgeable HR director. With the change to workday, CEV points are gone. Yes, all that seniority you built up over the years with CEV points is essentially wiped out with workday.

He said all the Express job positions are now grouped together in a very different way. For example, most of the hub/ramp positions are now grouped together, such as ramp agent/teamleader, DG agent/specialist, material handler, handler, etc etc. What this means that even if you are a full time employee with 20 years seniority, a part time handler with 3 months of seniority now ranks ahead of you if you were trying to bid on say a full time ramp agent position, or anything in that "group". He also went on to say if two employees from the same group were bidding on a position in that same group, instead of going by the higher CEV points which they would in the past, they will just be using the hire date to determine seniority in this case. So essentially part-time and full-time are now considered the same when it comes to building seniority, which is very different then what it has been in the past.

The position I was trying to bid on was a ramp position, and like I said I am currently a full time courier with 5+ years in. There was 2 part-time handlers with less then a year of seniority that outranked me for the position which makes absolutely no sense. He went on to say that couriers are actually in a very small grouping with workday and basically only consist of couriers and swing courier positions. What this means that even if you have years of seniority with the company, with workday it seems you basically have no chance to bid and actually get anything worthwhile that is out of your particular grouping now. The only chance you would have to get something outside of your grouping would be if nobody bid on that particular position which isn't going to happen if the position is desirable at all.

Anyone else have any information they can add to this with regards to workday? I'm really hoping this guy had some incorrect information but he was adamant that this will be the new system going forward when it comes to hiring.

Sounds like they want to keep couriers as couriers with all of the turnover.

What about for folks that left forever ago and then came back? Second hire date?

Sucks man, hope you get it figured out and what you’re after.

I transferred out of state a few years ago when my girlfriend needed to move closer to her mother due to some health issues. We are now wanting to move back and it seems I'm now SOL unless a courier position opens which NEVER happens in the city I'm from. Thus, I'm unable to move with these new rules basically.

A little warning that they were planning on drastically changing the hiring guidelines might have been nice, so I could have at least tried to transfer back before these changes hit. I'm sure I'm not going to be the only one that will be friend'ed once people become aware of these changes (if they are correct).

I would like more info here.

It has always been the case that employees were in groups for FT vs PT. Even someone with 40 years would be ranked behind another employee with only 1 year for the same group. This does not seem like a change. Most likely someone already in the same job code and employment COE (category of employment) applied. That has been the policy for a very long time.

Time in Position has always outranked CEV points, i.e., a part time Dispatcher with 1 year is ahead of a full time Courier with 10 years, IF the job is for a full time Dispatch position.

This is and has always been the case, if you are leaving your job classification(CRR) and going to another classification, those already in the classification will always outrank you, the exception being swing drivers(and possibly a few other positions) swings submit a supplimental application sometimes to prove route knowledge.

So a few examples of how horrible this is:
a 20 year Swing driver can be outbid on a regular route by a 2yr CRR
or your example a 5yr CRR can be outbid by any handler(except maybe a new hire)
PT-FT CRRs are all the same classification so goes purely on CEV rank.

I realize there have always been job groups that have given low seniority employees priority. However, what I was told is that the groups have been drastically changed. In some areas, a lot more jobs are grouped together (hubs for example) and other groupings made much smaller probably to discourage bidding.

Also, someone mentioned CEV points, and I was told flat out that CEV points are no more. Previously, full timers earned 1 point per month and part timers earned half a point. This was done away with completely I was told and they are simply going by the hire date now. Thus, full and part time positions now accrue seniority at the same rate which is a fairly large change.

Regardless, before these changes with workday I could easily see my ranking on lots of different jobs and many times I was ranked first or at least in the top 3. I have recently bid on a few of these jobs as I'm trying to transfer back and every position so far I have ranked dead last being out bid by part time employees in various different job categories that previously weren't in the same groupings. I'm going to have to bid on a handler position that has no bids in order to transfer back which sucks.

Be very careful downgrading. If you’re out of courier position over two years you will NOT necessarily go back to your old rate. Research it first.

I’m pretty sure the way the new changes are is the way it was before they came up with the CEV bs. It was based on hire date.
