You don't need to max out your contributions but at least 5%. Probably closer to 10% is better.
Yeah, between my pension(retired in 2015) and SS, I haven't taken a pay cut. My 401 K is for other stuff like 3 trips to Europe and helping my kids with bigger purchases. I just wish those benefits didn't have to get taxed. If I withdraw more than 20k in a given year, I end up owing on my return.
