Terminations in 804 begin: 20 drivers fired Monday

Which is why UPS will not give an inch as long as Liam is in the Teamsters.
Now we see how much a BA is worth to Local 804 management ... more than 250 times the value of a driver.
Not even close to that. What you're seeing is a difficult situation unfold. Liam was elected, not appointed, so removing him isn't so easy considering the legality of the walkout hasn't been determined. Removing him prematurely could indicate to an arbitrator the local felt his actions were in error, weakening their case.
What value is UPS putting on these drivers if they're merely trying to settle an old score?

I don't think that anyone at Local 804, including Liam, believes that a BA is worth "more than 250 times the value of a driver". They may believe that Liam was right to take the action that he took. I do. That aside, an elected BA can't be fired. Check the IBT Constitution. Local 804 understands that and I'm sure that UPS understands that. All that aside, would it really make sense to allow a BA to be used as a bargaining chip in order to appease UPS? The same UPS that triggered this incident with their violation of Article 18, Section 4? Ron Carey's 1982 strike was triggered in Maspeth when a called in sick on the workday before a holiday and the workday after that holiday. Claimed his back was bothering him. UPS wanted him examined by a company doctor, he refused and Ron shut them down. Ron acknowledged the contract violation and justified it by stating that UPS can do it, we can do it. UPS got an injunction, but I'm just guessing that they would have preferred to have Ron's head rather than an injunction. And Maspeth, of all places! And here we are 32 years later!

Agreed...but I don't think ups is trying to settle some old score...they already fired him. Liam's the one with something to prove to management.

Are you talking about the news reports stating 804 wasn't available for comment. Oh I forgot that's the IBT's fault

Wrong Stoned fish. That news report was during the coverage of the City Hall press conference. The "reporter" who made that comment was standing in the middle of numerous 804 members and looking up at the 804 Executive Board on the staging area.
Not available for comment? Really? They're not that shy. All he had to do was ask one of them for a comment. The purpose of the press conference was to attract public attention. Walter Cronkite you're not!

Ron Carey had balls and UPS knew that when he said something or threatened to do something, UPS could be certain that it would be carried out.

When the Wildcat walkout was organized back when the 150 lb weight limit was thrust upon us, Carey gave the company the requisite time to hold that walkout. We walked, and the language was changed and put in the Master Agreement. I have nothing but respect for that man and he never put our jobs on the line. He went by the book.
In essence, a strike is putting your job on the line.

Are you attempting to say Ron Carey would have taken the same actions as Liam???

Will reformers be a group to give up our right to strike in 804.
In 1990 4800 walked at his wife orders.

When UPS cried "he's breaking the contract" Ron said "you break it EVERY DAY".
Paraphrased: Screw you.

Was Jr up on the stage beating the podium with a fist yelling "stop the war on workers"? Did he yell "take those SOB's out!"? No.
He and Kenny were still looking for the Reopener and strike authorization papers they ran through Scott Davis's office shredder.
We miss Ron Carey. He made us proud to be Teamsters.
Compare that to the "businessman" that Jim Kelly liked so well in the 90s.

I know, all you BAs will defend the current leaders to the end.

Decertification is a much brought up word lately and that's a pretty sad thing.

you girls aren't understanding something..... UPS is considering this abandoning the jobs since it was during work hours. THIS IS ALL ABOUT UNION BUSTING ...... UNION BUSTING ..... UNION BUSTING .if it costs them a few million to start what does that mean when you profit 6 billion a year. an extra $10 . all you above are right the international should be pulling an immediate national wildcat ...........
