It's really not. As long as you have an IT guy, someone to pay the bills(server, forum software, etc.)and someone to be an Administrator(they are the one's that have full control of the website, mod's have limited access)then you're good to go. Yes the hardest thing here would be finding someone to be Admin. Once all that is set up as long as there isn't constant IT problems it'll run itself(at least mine did). The big problem here is someone taking it over(if her daughter does not) needs all Cheryl's passwords, billing would have to be changed, etc. Yes taking it over will be hard it may be easier for someone(who want's to take the plunge)to just start a new website.
I would hate to see this place go but if it does, nothing we can do about it

I seem to be the middle guy so far and I haven't heard anything from either party yet.

I have not heard anything

My opinion (and it doesn't mean much) is that it's going to be far too difficult to have someone take it over if her daughter doesn't want to. I think it will be entirely up to her to keep it going. Now if she doesn't maybe she can give up the domain name to someone willing to take on the expense and then start from scratch (no pun intended Scratch). Or if that doesn't happen someone can start a new site and let everyone know here before this site shuts down. Just a thought.

@scratch said she wants the site to go on but does not have any interest on running it.

Well I wouldn't mind taking it over if I could get my son to help with the IT work and donations to pay to run it, but I know my son is far too busy and taking donation's sounds like too much of a hassle.
Totally agree. Some might do it for a couple months, then let it go. You'd end up begging every day on the site. Doesn't sound fun to me.

Actually...that's not the case.
Two people have shown interest, the first one is supposed to be in contact with Cheryl's daughter. The daughter does want somebody to take over the site and continue what Cheryl started. I don't know what it takes to turn over a domain name to a new owner. We also have to think about if this has to go through probate court from a legal standpoint first. Both of my inlaws passed away a year ago and it took the probate judge eight months just to name my sister-in-law the executor so we can do something with their estate.

And honestly I'm pretty sure this is the very bottom of her list losing two parents so close together

Oooooo, we need to start a thread about this! We just did a trust for my Mom to hopefully avoid probate.

I know a guy that does a podcast. He takes donations monthly I think thru some service. Starts at $2/month and anything you want above that. All volunteer too, you're welcome to listen and not pay.
More likely to get continuous donations if people sign up to donate, and it's automatic.

Supposedly Covid put the local court system way behind. Cheryl and Tony only had one child so hopefully, they had a will. I have to admit I haven't done one myself yet. I had to pay $1750 for half of our attorney's fees to start probating my in-law's estate. The same lawyer quoted me something like $2000 to do my will, I thought that was ridiculous. You can do a simple will yourself and file it at the courthouse.
