we never asked. we were young and it was just part of our lives. if you think about it, being brought up that way you just don't question things.I was in basic training with a kid from Chicago who said he was always told to never ask what his father did for a living----but they always had money.
It wasn't until I was grown up that my parents told me stories. My Dad passed a couple years ago and several months before he did he told me all kinds of stories. Actually , it was my Dad who moved away from Boston so we wouldn't be part of it. His brothers for the most part did too. Very smart. They saw the direction things were heading.
My family did whatever they had to do to protect us and make our lives easier and did not make excuses about it. But they wanted us to have a straight normal life and pushed us towards getting a good education.
