Going forward two big questions among main will have to be answered:
The mental health of the individual which will likely stir the debate in that area.
Was he using an assault style rifle and will it drive the movement to ban them?

Got a friend who’s a cop he’s been shot a few times with his vest on. Saved his life, broke some ribs and definitely isn’t something you just pop up from. Still hurts like hell.

Also worthless against a rifle round unless you're wearing a plate carrier with level IV inserts.

A couple of years ago I went out shooting with my Son and two of his friends, the only rifle I had was an old M 1 Carbine from WW II that I inherited from my Father in Law. I never fired a rifle since basic training 50 years ago. the M 1worked perfectly and the l943 ammo much to my surprise. One of my son's friends had a M 15 with a scope, I took a couple of shots with it and was amazed on how easy it was, I actually hit a tin can several times 300 feet away it was that simple. The rifle itself shot like a 22 without any recoil, the ammo itself is not much bigger that a 22...it is not an demon gun, the problem is that it is so easy to use that any nut with a grudge will choose it as a weapon of choice
