Anyone just make a career from part time ups?

I've been going back and forth as to what my goals are going forward in my life, but I don't think leaving ups is one of them. The pension and benefits just seem too good and to be honest with all of you there is no way im going back to school.

I own and run a decent sized landscaping business full time and do preload. I have been asked to be a driver, but I am reluctant because of how my business does for me, and because most of the drivers I talk to seem miserable.

Anyways, I know I can't do landscaping forever so a part of me just wants to work my ass off for like 10 years doing both, then selling off my business and living a comfortable part time life at ups. I figured in 10 years lets just say I will be making around 20 an hour part time and hopefully I can sell off the business for a nice chunk of change, and maybe buy a multi family home or something of the like.

Does my dream seem unrealistic? I don't need much to be comfortable and im very good with money. If I can partially retire in 10-11 years once im 40 and just comfortable work part time isn't that kind of living the dream?

Do you need an air compressor or tire gauge

it isnt impossible to do both. a lot of people work at ups have part time jobs, or businesses. retiring depends on how much you got saved and what your business is worth, how much it grows etc..

We have several people who have done this. The ones who have gotten too old to still do landscaping will hire guys to do it for them

You could maybe go into management or driver if that's what you really want to do. I don't know how well your knees are going to hold up if you keep doing all that work.

I've been able to get through doing both but it is hell of a lot of work. Realistically even when I decide to "stop" landscaping I will probably keep some of my customers who pay cash anyways. The reason I threw out a number like 10 years is because lets face it, you can't do anything on 11 an hour. But I also don't want to work my life away either. What's the point of having all this money if you can't spend it

35years

Gravy route
90% of the 2 jobbers eventually figure it out and see how much more they could make just making overtime as a driver. Meanwhile they don't get the pension credit that they should have and end up working more years this way. Unless you can clear over the overtime rate for drivers ($50+) doing the second job you are cheating yourself. Plus your pension will suffer and you will end up working many more years.

I understand but you don't want to sale your business and not get what you put into it back. that's why I say in ten years you won't know what is worth. businesses are only has good has the client

I hear you man, but becoming a driver is something im not sure I want to do. Im at least going to wait it out and see what happens on the next contract before I make a decision. From what I read on here and from what other drivers tell me some of the management make the job hell. To be honest I have little to no stress just doing my part time preload gig

I've been at ups 15 years, I have no plans on going driving. it isnt for me, for others it is. you have to do what makes you happy

the big difference is part time takes a while time get up into making decent money. driving you can do it after 4 years. I always tell myself it is what you have to do to get that money and is it worth it.

My dad is a life long teamster and the management here is all a bunch of boners so I can't see myself fitting in lol

Self Employed, been part time with UPS for 10 years. I'm at UPS for the benefits, and self employed for the money plus I enjoy what I do and work out of the house. No intentions of ever going full time even though I've been asked to drive and been asked to cross over to the dark side. (That will never happen. LOL) UPS give me Medical, Dental, Vision, a pension, the ability to put into a 401K, and the ability to purchase UPS stock at a discount. Have been putting 35% into a Roth 401K for years and just recently started having $50 a week go toward purchasing stock. Other then that, I have an $130 a week held out for taxes so basically, I very rarely get a check.

Plenty of PT people work here for the benefits and work somewhere else after the shift. That includes landscaping and people who've been here over 20 years.

Depending on your building, there are plenty of different jobs you can do that doesn't require driving. The bigger the building, the more variety of jobs. All you need is seniority. Keep doing what you're doing.
