'I didn't need to do this.' Critics say Trump quote undercuts national emergency for border wall

"Thirty minutes into an off-the-cuff defense of his decision to declare a national emergency to help build his border wall, President Donald Trump made an admission that may have handed ammunition to legal opponents of the move.

Trump, who has long described the situation on the Southwest border as a "crisis" and an "invasion," appeared to suggest his administration had all the time it needed to build the hundreds of miles of border barrier he has demanded for months.

"I could do the wall over a longer period of time. I didn't need to do this," Trump told reporters gathered in the White House Rose Garden on Friday, shortly before he signed a proclamation declaring the emergency. "But I'd rather do it much faster."

Trump’s opponents, including a number of groups and officials suing the administration over the national emergency, pounced on the president's candid remarks and said they appeared to undermine his claims of an urgent problem on the southern border.

George Conway, an attorney and frequent Trump critic who is married to longtime Trump aide Kellyanne Conway, summed up the reaction in a post on Twitter: "This quote should be the first sentence of the first paragraph of every [lawsuit] filed."

Social insurance . Hahahaha. Let me get this straight. Any publicly funded social program that stands to benefit you personally in your advancing age is
...."social insurance"......and those that won't is "socialism"....... But, here's the alarming part. There are others like you out there who believe the same. The
"I'm entitled to mine but you're not entitled to yours" mentality.

no i think its phrased "You're not entitled to what I worked and paid for." hope that helps

If Latin Americans can dig the Panama Canal digging a tunnel under Trump's wall is no job at all.

lets see
1)walk across the border
2)or make them dig miles of tunnel to sneak in. your panama canal example took 10 years to complete and hundreds of thousands of dollars at 1904 rates.

I think I'll take option 2

It’s literally called Social Security. That you called it “insurance” like you paid into it all your life without ever expecting a payout doesn’t change anything.
Right, and it spreads the risk of being destitute as a senior amongst the entire working population. It's insurance against that. That word Social really trips y'all up.

I think when it goes to court trump should just present past statements from democratic leadership where they supported the wall as evidence.

never seen insurance work like that. the amount you pay in and the number of years you pay in and the age you retire dictate how much you receive.

thats a government ponzi scheme not insurance.

Can you not choose how much you pay for insurance and what it will give back to you? No one is forced to put a full 35 years in to max out their SS. You can put in the minimum quarters needed to get the minimum monthly payment. Considering the fluctuations in the stock market I appreciate having a guaranteed payment, even if they have to reduce it at some point. A lot of people got burned in 2008 but they still paid SS.

Did the Democrats say it was worthy of a Presidential national emergency declaration then?

Not for me to decide. But they weren’t used to bypass Congress in order to fund domestic political priorities.

Here’s a list of all of them:
https://www.brennancenter.org/sites/default/files/analysis/NEA Declarations.pdf
Our Federal prisons are loaded with illegals who committed murder, rape, robbery. There have been hundreds of thousands of crimes committed by illegals In Texas alone in the last ten years. How many more families have to be brutalized before Dems recognize the crisis that they have publicly recognized before? Will they decide to protect Americans when it's politically expedient to do so?
