California Driver applying for open Texas Driver Position

I agree... too many issues of drawing attention to yourself...

rental properties can be a mixed bag... know someone who has them and there has been a few times renters have totally thrashed the place and took off... thousands of dollars in damage....

Storage garages are the way to go around here. We probably have 3 dozen storage complexes around here and they are all full. They fill up as fast as someone builds one. Low costs (if they are just cold storage) and little upkeep. Housing rental can suck big time. Too much riff-raff out there who think nothing of trashing a place.

I see rental property as my ultimate retirement plan.

Sure some units might get trashed but this is a normal thing landlords deal with. This is why you keep a few contractors at your disposal it's the cost of doing business. The only thing I worry about is property taxes. They are MUCH higher in Texas than they are in California.

Texas has no state income tax

Cool, so let's talk about this.

What would you do if you were me? I can get a few days off and take a flight. Everyone says quit first but that seems asinine. I would much rather secure the job then quit.

Seems it would be a slam dunk if you had to quit and get rehired.
They can have an established person who can hit the street and deliver with no worries for starting driver rate.
The only difference is that starting out, every route you go on is blind in unknown territory.
I think you would have great odds of getting on.

Quick update.

All 3 steawards say go for it.
One of them spoke with my center manager this morning after PCM and the boss is ok with me booking the appointment also. He says let him know how he can be useful to help with the process.

This is unbelievable! Booking tonight for July 6 and we will see hiw this goes. If I have to quit thats fine but I will push to keep my progression.

Naturally, i will keep everyone updated on how this goes.

I just spoke with my center manager and he confirmed the conversation he had with my steward was correct. I have permission to take off and go interview!

Quick update.

I interviewed last week for a TCD/Preload position and should be getting my offer letter today. The HR rep told me the only thing holding it up was me passing backgrounds.

I was told if I can get 30 punches in I could get locked in at TCD pay when I go full time. That is $10/hr more than I currently make so Im going to go that route.

Its a step backwards for sure, but if all goes well i could come out in a much better position.

If you have to start over, at least 2 years isn't a lot to give up.That Willowbrook building is just beginning to start up. They have a temporary building with a few routes out of it. Most of the work is still being run out of the Sweetwater building. When the new building is completed it will be even bigger than Sweetwater (104 outbound, 21 inbound doors), and bigger than the Stafford building. Familiar with the Cypress/Tomball area. Nice place to live, but getting saturated quickly. A lot of people are moving north, To the Woodlands, Conroe mainly. Btw, since Texas now has open carry, it's now called LTC (license to carry) and the cost is supposed to go from $140.00/4 years to $40.00/4 years in September. It took me approximately 20 days from the completion of my class, background check, etc to get my license in the mail. Good luck to you, BrownThunder.

Been to Sweetwater once. It was massive compared to my little center. Can't imagine what Willowbrook is going to look like. Like you said, that area is blowing up. Conroe lost some routes to Willowbrook last year, so some of their spare drivers came to help us during peak.
I went to driving school at Mykawa. That part of Houston is the drizzling :censored2:s.

I went to Mykawa every night for years. I put their sunrise lineup on their doors for probably 10 years. It was not unusual to hear gunshots around there at night. There is a reason it's known as "the armpit" of the Houston area. Management gets sent there as punishment. I sure don't miss going to that place. I haven't seen the new Willowbrook building construction in person. Have seen the map location. I'm sure it is in a more convenient location than SW. I can see where Conroe would get too big for their location. I don't think they can expand much out there in the woods where they were located. You had to pull trailers off their property to the road to build sets it was so tight.

Thanks guys your support here means more than you know!

re: offer letter, yes I realize they don't typically provide offer letters. The home builder we are going with needs proof of job for my pre-qualification so my HR rep shot me a quick email with all the necessary information.

Looks like I secured the job on Friday, I report to duty on July 19th.

Stafford is cool but it is pretty far from Cypress, furthermore there are about 2,000 tolls I have to pay if I want to run 99 all the way south to 90.

Ideally, I want to be in the Cypress center so when the entire center gets pulled up to willowbrook I can leave with them.

I just downloaded the southern supplement and will be combing it shortly for all the important information.

My HR rep did mention to the interview/tour group that they do consider the applicant's zip code and try to place them somewhere closer to their home.

I will have to see if I can be placed in the sweetwater location. Just mapped it and it's considerably closer than stafford. She said there is a cypress center operating out of Stafford but It didn't compute because how on earth are drivers leaving the hub with 10:30 commits on the other side of town?

These are all questions that will be answered in a few weeks.
