What amazes me about debates about welfare is all the pretend that goes along with the debate.

People don’t hate so called welfare programs because of the money that gets spent.

They hate welfare programs because who they believe they help.

Yet instead of talking about how peoples’ obvious prejudices is the real issue. We pretend welfare is about money and not about a lot of Americans saying I do not want the government to help these Americans that I believe are lazy or stupid or criminal or etc.

That’s the whole core of the welfare discussion in America every time.

The other thing that amazes me about the welfare discussion is this.

the wealthiest Americans and largest industries created a whole industry just to constantly beg the government. We call that 24/7 begging the government industry lobbying.

We don’t call the wealthy names. We don’t call them lazy, or immoral, or criminal. We don’t rail against government dependency. The rich created a whole industry to feed their government dependency.

In fact, the wealthiest Americans are so good at extracting money from begging the government that they pay professional beggars(lobbyists) enough to make the professional beggars rich.

We all see this. It is not hidden. So the government can withstand constant begging by the wealthiest Americans to extract huge sums of money, and no one really raises a sound about it, but that same government giving money to economically poor Americans gets a lot of people very very angry.

I just wish people would be honest and say I hate those other Americans. I don’t know want the US government helping them. That’s at least honest. Instead of all of this pretending that you are against welfare because of excessive government spending.

No I’m saying complaints about “welfare” have zero to do with the money being spent.

Again so called welfare programs(TANF, Foodstamps, WIC, section 8 housing) are a very tiny part of the federal budget. The largest of those 4 programs is the foodstamp program and it is less than 2% of the federal budget. Individually the rest of those programs are each less than 1% of the federal budget. It is not about the money. It is never about the money. It is about who as in who those programs are perceived to help that’s what so called “welfare” critics hate not the money spent, but the other Americans they perceive “welfare programs” are benefitting.

I understand that the 'hate' is actually 'jealous'.
Therefore I declare to God and all that can read this:
I am jealous of those other Americans. I don’t know want the US government helping them.

We good now?

Thanks for letting share my thoughts.

I think the Americans who "hate" welfare recipients do so for the most part because many of them struggle to make ends meet and know their tax dollars are going towards people they see at supermarkets with baskets loaded down with good food. I don't know for sure but I've been told in the past that a number of States will give cash change from EBT cards and that often is used to buy beer, etc. You want to make it about race but in sheer numbers I think there are more Whites receiving it. I think I'm like many in saying it's good to have a safety net, just don't make a lifestyle out of it if you're able bodied. And I get the strong sense that no matter what we say you'll turn it into racial animosity. Not the case for many of us, certainly the case for many others.

“Jealousy” has nothing to do with hatred for so called “welfare” recipients.

First, all Americans benefit hugely from the government. The poorest benefit the least that is part of why they are poor. The wealthiest benefit the most and that’s part of why they are rich.

If anything the poor should be “jealous” of what everyone else gets from the government. But for the most part they aren’t.

Also, if one was poor enough any American could qualify for a so called “welfare program”. So get poor enough and your “jealousy” of those Americans will end.

Like I said people cannot be honest with themselves.

This litany of rationalizations is meaningless. No other government programs do we make contingent on whether we like the people in the government program.

If a student gets a pell grant to go to college, we don’t care if the student underage drinks, or that a lot of those students do drugs, or date rape other students, or cheat on tests. We don’t say hey a lot of bad peopl participate in the pell grant program we should cut it or I’m upset about the immorality of these students. Why should we help all students who qualify for pell grants pay for college, we should only help the good ones who aren’t cheating the system.

If you own a home and claim the mortgage interest deduction again we don’t care if you are an alcholic, if you verbally abuse your spouse and children, we don’t care if you even cheat on your taxes or speed. We don’t say a lot of bad people claim the home mortgage interest deduction and I’m upset about their immoral behavior why should we help all home owners. We should only help the “good ones”.

And certainly for the extremely wealthy, we don’t care at all that their are bad people benefitting from the aid the government gives to them.

So mfers can rationalize why they hate certain groups of Americans who benefit from so called “welfare programs” and race is a huge part of that, but that’s just it. It is a rationalization.

They don’t care about all the other immoral or bad people benefitting from various government programs. Only the ones who benefit from “welfare programs”. That’s my whole point.
