Government Motors

"The Treasury Department yesterday revised its loss estimate for the Government Motors bailout from $14.33 billion to $23.6 billion, thanks to the company’s sinking stock price. GM’s Sept. 30 closing price, on which the new estimate is based, was $20.18, about $13 less than its December IPO price and $35 less than what is needed for taxpayers to break even."

Chevrolet has freed 2,300 Volts from the automotive equivalent of indentured servitude as it hurries to meet a self-imposed goal of selling 10,000 of the plug-in hybrids by the end of 2011.

With supplies low, Chevy has told its dealers that they can sell their demo vehicles, ending a previous agreement that required the outlets to keep the vehicles on the lot for at least six months before offering them for sale as used cars, Automotive News reports.

From a representative in Pennsylvania, Mike Kelly who is also a Chevrolet dealer whose family has sold Chevys since 1953:
I’m a Chevrolet dealer…

we have a Chevy Volt on the lot, it’s been there now for four weeks. We’ve had one person come in to look at it, just to see what it actually looks like… Here’s a car that costs $45,763. I can stock that car for probably a year and then have to sell it at some ridiculous price. By the way, I just received some additional information from Chevrolet: in addition to the $7,500 [federal] tax credit, Pennsylvania is going to throw another $3,500 to anybody foolish enough to buy one of these cars, somehow giving them $11,000 of taxpayer money to buy this Volt.

When you look at this, it makes absolutely no sense. I can stock a Chevy Cruze, which is about a $17,500 car and turns every 30 to 40 days out of inventory… or I can have a Volt, which never turns and creates nothing for me on the lot except interest costs… So a lot of these things that we’re seeing going on have a tremendous economic impact on people who are being asked to stock them and sell them. There is no market for this car. I do have some friends who have sold them, and they’re mostly to people who have an academic interest in it, or municipalities who are asking to buy these cars.

I would buy one if I had a garage, but I don't.
Nor do I have a way to recharge it at my condo, nor at work.
Nor do I have the $40,000 + in spare change laying about. With or without all those gov't rebates included.
Nor does it fit my demands on a vehicle, since it can't really tow anything nor can I launch a boat in and out of the salt water without causing it serious damage.
Not to mention how it would have a smaller battery power in my very cold winter days.
bhos had the right idea, build a car that only a small percentage of the population could actually use and promote it as the end all answer to this country's energy problem.
Who care if GM makes a profit as long as Uncle Sam is footing the bill.

I can't say that I am all that surprised at the failure that is the Chevy Volt. Its a car that really doesn't stand out in any category with the exception of its power train which is supposed to be highly efficient, but the cost is so prohibitively high that it negates the fuel sipping nature of the car and you have to be concerned that it will burn your garage and or house down with no warning what so ever. For $45k I can have a diesel BMW 335d, and for the taxpayer subsidized price of $33k I can have a nicely equipped VW Passat Diesel or if style and economy is my goal an equally well equipped Mini Cooper S could be had for that price, and none of these alternatives will burn your house or garage down without warning. I predict a quiet death for the Volt not too long after Obummer is out of office. Its not practical for anyone except for those who have a lot of spare cash to throw around at something that is some what "different" from a regular hybrid, and will never pay for the difference in price unless you drive it some insane number of miles. Its a flop, and its only a matter of time before GM acknowledges this sad truth.

It is not unusual for the intial product offering of a new technology to be prohibitively expensive. I can recall paying $800 for my first VCR--now you can't even find one and, if you do, they are being given away. I would love to have an electric car but am not willing to spend $45K for one. Give it time--the technology will improve and the price will come down. Until then I will drive my $23K Nissan Altima.

Obviously, you don't live in the north, because we even need to plug in our gas powered engines into an electrical outlet during freezing temperatures.
Even during the day, and at work, too (Yes, companies supply the outlets), otherwise we would be stuck without a vehicle running after a days work.

The Volt was tested here up north, and it can stand the cold, but actually below a certain temperature it does start up automatically with gas, and later switches to the electric mode.

I would love that car !

Anyways, don't hear anyone complaining about the new Ford that is simular to the Volt and will cost $40.000 , too.

Can you imagaine that ? A fully public company doing the same ? Stupid, huh ?

klein, GM is buying back all 6,000 sold Volts.
Funny I recall them stating that production was 10,000 a month.
Any way if you wish for one those bought back Volts I believe you could get one real cheap, just call it a fire sale.

Well, maybe you'll get your wish and GM USA goes bankrupt, and they can produce cars in Europe, China, Canada & Mexico only.
Afterall, our government as well as the German one has a stake in GM, and us people do wish they survive, even if it costed us some dollars.

I don't care about the jobs in the US, but they will stay here if worse came to worse and the US shut it's plants down.

OH good grief, no one is wishing for GM to go bankrupt but most don't want tax dollars bailing them out AGAIN. Why is that so hard for you to understand? The detailing of GM's mistakes do not mean there is a death wish for GM.

So, the Volt and it's problems opens up a whole new 'can of worms'.

Where I live, we have 2-car garages. If you have 2 cars, both of them MUST be parked in the garage according to assocuation rules.

So, If my Volt decides to spontaneously combust, can I sue the Association for making me put it in the garage when I really wanted to park it in the driveway?:happy2:

Interesting fact;
During the 2008 Campaign bhos repeatly stated that electricity cost were to increase, yet today he wants everyone to drive an electric car ?
So just where are these electric cars to get their power from ?
What was a gallon of gas back in 2008...under $2 ?
And today close to $4.
Now that's real change.

That's how brilliant he is - the first president ever to realize Americans need to be more independant on foreign oil ! ;)

So just where are these electric cars to get their power from ?
Certainly not from Iraq, Iran or Saudi Arabia !

Yeah, and the Dow was under 6500 points, too ! What did he do ?
Now that's real change.

and certainly not from anywhere in or around the US either.

Your kidding right ?
Don't you ever read how many natural gas powerplants are in the works ?
Natural Gas that is in abundance in the US and Canada ?

Washington State alone is building a few (with the help of a Canadian company, too).
Plus we'll see much more green energy being harvested in the future, too.

When was the last time you heard and felt a shortage of electricity ?
Unlike in 1973 when the oil valves were turned off in the middle-east !

Mind you, I don't care - as long as the US is stuck on oil consumption - Canada stays rich ! :)
