Boston left the shopping areas unprotected. Their idea was to keep pushing the mob back, even some officers kept saying "to where". Small fast moving groups broke off to continue to burn the Financial, Waterfront and Downtown Crossing areas. That is they were behind where the main actions was taking place. BPD only had foot patrols in these areas and asked for the bike units to help.
The Prudential Center had an estimated 100-150 loiters inside of the Mall. While others hit Newbury St's high end shops and the Star Market on Boylston St.
Just after 1 AM , the BPD officers who had to start their next shift at 7 AM were ordered to go home.
And they did not stop vehicle traffic in the effected areas until it was early morning.
