I was a Local 710 Union Steward for Clerical. In 97, the company was trying to remove all union clerical positions nationwide. They had started to move work to North Carolina in a former Kmart, a right to work state. Hiring non-union employees who had no knowledge of how UPS worked. The company offered all union clerical the opportunity to follow their work to Johnson City Tennessee. Some locals followed their work and were forced to work in cold house trailers in winter and hot in summer. Several union stewards around the nation and I kept in contact working together to write grievances every week to stop the transfer of work. My local Business Agent would not help at all to try to prevent losing union jobs. All communications with other stewards were long distance calls at our expense as at that time, free long distance calls were not available like now. I finally was able to get a one on one meeting with Ron Carey in Louisville Kentucky. He promised he would address the issue. In the new contract, it was agreed upon all union clerical positions would remain until each union employee retired. I have seen on this forum recently that many clerical positions are gone. Also, some such as Customer Counters are being eliminated. This was not the agreement made in 1997. Several union stewards and I fought hard to keep these positions. Its interesting that the union is always looking to unionize companies for growth, but failed to keep these clerical positions. I believe Ron Carey would have stood up to the company to prevent this.
