It’s interesting reading about Carter. He was usually regarded as not a good president, equally from people on the left and right, but also regarded as a good person.

But also reading about his presidency, I don’t really understand why he has the reputation as a bad president, it seemed like most of the faults were from Congress and things out of his control

Carter was a nice guy but failed as a President. Most of his mistakes were all on him and not Congress.

humans are a poor judge of things. and yet everyone encourages democracy vs having a few people with all the power.

When Carter ran for a second term, someone in his own party ran against him in the Primary.
When this person lost to Carter in the primary, this person wouldn't endorse and throw his support to Carter. Some say this was huge in Carters eventual loss to Reagan.
This person was Ted Kennedy.
