Sober, one reason I love running so much is how individual it is... I ran my first 50k this year and believe me I am no speed demon (time was 6hr 24min). I am definitely not built like a runner (5'4" 165lbs) and most of my younger years was spent wrestling. But if you can forget about all the guys ahead of you, then you can set your own goals. It is a lot of fun and you meet a lot of good people along the way. My next major goal is to complete a 50 mile course, but that is still a good six to ten months off...... Stay the course and run your race. Good luck
WOW T24, you're a plug of a guy. I'd hate to wrestle you, and with this endurance stuff, you'd be like the energizer bunny. Good "luck" in your 50 mile journey.

Dude, that was FREAKING awesome. I am so out of the loop in this sport. I just did a quick read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Mills on Billy and was fascinated. He reminds me of guy I train with named Mark Swart. He's a Duathlete, who's on his way as we speak to a Duathlon in Miami. This guy just came on the scene here in the Treasure Coast of Florida, and has been smoking the competition. Just yesterday he set a PR in the 5k and beat one of his arch nemesis' by 9 seconds, out sprinting him in the last 1/4 mile. Not too shabby for a 43 year old guy who's main sport was cycling 2 years ago. All this talk makes me wanna go out and run, LOL.

Check out the movie "Running Brave". It's about Billy Mills... not sure how accurate it is but still a good view.

Plug of a guy? Lol... I guess you're right... that's why I am envious of all those faster runners who are so slender and lean. I know I will never match their fast times, but I still love distance running. Even when I was at my peak athletic ability I weighed 140 (19 years old). Some of the best distance runners around here seem to be in their 40's like myself, so I think there are still many miles left in this little body

It's funny that you mention those lean runner guys/gals. I had a 190lb body builder physique a few years back and am currently 160lbs at 5'9" tall. I dreaded the thought of becoming one of those lean runners, but have realized that I have gained much speed by trimming down. I want to get even faster and am dreading leaning down even more. I think that I will be content at 145-150lbs, though the people at my gym and my Wife currently think I have an eating disorder, LOL.

Its always fascinating to watch vintage videotape of sporting events from the 60's and early 70's. Graphics that we take for granted, such as the elapsed race time display, were difficult and extraordinarily expensive to produce with the techology of the era. Its funny to see the primitive analog clock rolling off the time like a crooked odometer up in the corner of the screen. And every time the camera passes by something that reflects light it creates a flash that sort of "trails along" due to the poor filter techonogy they had to work with. I can remember as a small child when "instant replay" of NFL football games on network TV was a really big deal and considered state-of-the art high tech stuff.

As far as the race itself goes, this is definately an example of "old school" running. They are throwing elbows and pushing and bumping to an extent that would quickly get them disqualified in the modern day.

I don't even want to be as "tiny" as you guys though i like distance running. I am currently stuck at 230 lbs, 6'2". The lowest I really want to get is 200lbs. I started getting back into running at the beginning of the year and will do my first hallf marathon and maybe full marathon this fall. In the overall long term, I would love to get back on a bike and in the pool again and possibly do a triathalon, maybe even Ironman. One goal at a time.

This is for all you runners out there. Not the runners and gunners, mind you. I'm talking about people who run/jog competetively. I've been running races, 5k to 13.1miles, for about 3 years now. I also cycle, but that's another story.

Any of you get pre-race jitters? I mean, where you wake up way early, the day of the race, and start pacing through your mind about how you'll run and how you think you will, or would like to do? I find that everyday before the race, I start playing out scenarios in my head. Just wondering if anybody else feels the same way.

I know, I know, this is the Brown Cafe, and not a sports forum. I'm just asking, because I know that there are a bunch of running UPS'ers out there, and I'd like some of your input, training tips would also help. Thanks.:peaceful:

BTW, I ran a 5k today. Finished 15th overall at 20:09. That's not shabby by some standards, but by my own, I sucked. I wanted to run under 19:30.:dissapointed:

Those are some lofty goals, my brotha.

Hey, I said long term. Ironman is more of a dream but would be awesome to make a reality.
I'm doing my first sprint Triathlon in about 3 weeks and I'm not sure how good I will do. I'm actually just doing it to shut all of the people up that keep asking, "When are you going to do a Triathlon?" We'll see how I feel afterwards. I have a bunch of friends that do them and some are quite serious about them. I guess if I was a better swimmer, I'd be more comfortable. I'll let you know how it turns out.

The Dipsea is not an ultra, tourist would just be getting warmed by the time he hit the finish line :wink2:.
There's a movie about the Dipsea as well.

I sent the link to this video to my buddy the night before his duathlon. He LOVED it, and he came in first place, and his girl placed first overall female, as well.

I saw that in an article in Runner's World. Looks pretty cool. You and tourists24 would probably like the same races.
Basically for me,,, if it's a trail race then Im in... lol

I had a feeling you loved off road.

As far as the warmup distance goes, it comes at different times for me, depending on the race distance. For a 5k I usually warmup 1/2 mile to 1 mile before the race and then blast off, trying to hold my predetermined pace for each mile. I don't usually race against people, though I have chased my fair share of rabbits. For longer runs I usually feel locked in around mile 7 or 8. My 10k's are usually run at predetermined paces, as well.

I've never run a trail race, but would love to try one sometime, though 50 miles is a bit much for me.

Trail running is way better, I'm just not familiar with the trails around here to run them even though I've lived here almost all my life. My biggest thing about trail running is that it keeps your mind and eyes busy. There is always stuff to look at when your on the trail even if you've run the trail 100 times before. If your mind is busy then it's not thinking about your body hurting. Damn I need to get back into trail running!!

2 weeks till my sprint triathlon and I think I'll do okay in the bike and run portion, but don't know how well the swim will go for me. Hopefully the storm surge from Bonnie will have died down by then, though last years swim was in pretty rough water.

use your arms in the water and save your legs for the bike and run. Good luck!

I just did my "first" Sprint Triathlon today. I finished in 1:27.13, which is about 12 minutes slower than I thought I would. I must confess that I'm a terrible swimmer and didn't really practice that much. Out of 38 first timers, I finished 12th, with a 35th of 38 swim, a 5th place bike and a 1st place run. Here are my times.

MALE FIRST-TIMER

12...315...623 Stephen C...45 Port Saint Lucie...FL 1:27:13...35...17:32...5:29...5...39:35...2:02...1...22:37

My swim was horrible. I wanted to just quit. My muscles were all pumped and my heart rate was through the roof. I started feeling queasy, but I pushed on, walking out of the water under my own power. I wanted to, but didn't vomit. My head cleared up on the bike and I felt comfy on the run, though I didn't really push hard because I just wanted to see how I finished with trying to crush these. My transition times really killed me, lol, 5 1/2 minutes in transition 1 and 2 minutes in 2. I could have been in the lower 120's or in the upper teens if I tried harder today.

I don't know if I'll ever do another one of these, but if I do, I'll make sure I am much more prepared for the swim and the transitions.
