Let me tell you, I started out good, waded out as far as I could, swam to the right of everyone, and about 1/3 of the way my muscles were screaming. I flipped on my backed and started paddling with my hands at my sides, LOL, and when I picked up my head, the lifeguard was yelling that I was off course. I was heading toward the Bahamas. So I kept flipping back and forth, doggy paddling, breast stroke and whatever else I could do, and I finally made it. I absolutely dreaded the swim to the point I didn't want to go cool off in the ocean after the race, LOL.Swimming is the tough part, it's much more of a learned skill than biking or running. There's no way you'll get proficient at it without some good coaching.
I don't imagine I would have done any better . My go-to is the side stroke, you won't win any races with it but you'll get where you're going without burning too much energy. Ms Jones is a swimming machine, she usually swims laps for 2 hours at a pop. She's thought about doing Tri's but doesn't feel like investing all that time on the bike.Let me tell you, I started out good, waded out as far as I could, swam to the right of everyone, and about 1/3 of the way my muscles were screaming. Is she a good runner? If she swims and runs good, she can use a mountain bike and register in the "fat wheel" (mountain bike) category.I don't imagine I would have done any better . Our first date was a half marathon: She won and set the women's course record. So yeah, she's a good runner . She has a bike, it's just a question of committing to even more training time and she doesn't really feel like doing it.Is she a good runner? 3/8 mile swim, 13 mile bike and a 5k (3.1) run. The funny thing about the swim is that I failed to realize that 3/8ths is really close to 4/8ths or 1/2 mile. I never really was very good at math, and now that fact has almost killed me. I guess I'm gonna have to start making time in my workout for swimming. What were the distances of the sprint, Steve?

I ride a Trek that I got for $799 plus I upgraded some parts, like the wheels, stem and seat. You may find a good deal on EBay. A friend of mine found a full carbon Tri bike for $500 brand new. That's about 600 meters. I used to swim the 500 meter in HS so it's not much further, but in open water it feels like twice as much. I've been looking at getting a bike lately to start and ttain for some tris. I've always wanted to. I used to ride in HS too but haven't been on a bike regularly in close to 15 years when i sold my Cannondale when I was in a crunch for money I hate the idea of having to pony up $1k for a bike though sonce back then you could get a bike with Shimano 105's on it for $600 and now you have to spend $1200 or so. Ridiculous!!!
sweet looking gear Cement... hope you get some good use out of it.... keep us posted on your progressHey Steve, I picked up a bike today at a bike/ski shop. Since it's the beginning of ski season (yet 3-4 months till we get snow here) they have some sales on their bike stuff. Usually retails for $1300.. I picked it up for $1000.
Specialized Allez Elite Compact with full Shimano 105's. Need a helmet and then some clips and shoes.
Stug, so cool to see the family doing things together... Congrat the girls on the PR...... my 10 year old ran for an hour with me today.... soo coolMy girls most recent 5k.
Cement, how's the cycling coming along? You get broken in yet? Sign up for any TRI's?
Look for some Pearl Izumi Attack P.R.O. shorts. I have these and they are great.I've had a chance to ride it a total of 5 miles so far. The wife has had to work mandatory OT the last week, so that leaves me with minimal time to ride. And more importantly, I need a helmet and some shorts (good lord give me a pad to sit on). I mainly bought it to start riding more come spring since we don't have summer all year round up here like you do. But I will ride as much as I can time allowing before years end. So no tri's for me this year. I want to do one or two next year though.
FYI, my half marathon is next year. I'm planning on setting a PR too. Won't be that hard since I've never run 13.1 miles before
It's reaaly great, though the girls do so much better in cooler weather. I met a guy that reminded me of you. He's a bigger guy that just finished a marathon in Alaska. He runs slower, but has the endurance to run anything.Stug, so cool to see the family doing things together...
