Never knew this thread existed. Weather will be warming up here in the next few days. Been catching loads of female gills full of eggs lately with some bull males thrown in. They should be on the nest this weekend or next. Earlier in the smaller waters. Gonna change up my tactics and keep more females and let those bulls keep the gene pool going. A mess of 25 and I will be a happy camper. Then the freezer will be good for a good while. After that it's back to my 1st love- bass fishing and creek wading for smallies.

Out of the game for a while. Any recommendations for a kids set up, looking to do some panfishing on a small pond. Preferably no live bait, so lure recommendations too, not looking for trophy fish, more quantity.

cane pole and a container of worms some
Small hooks and bobbers you’ll catch more fish with worms or minnows
than artificial

with a cane pole there’s no reel to worry about keeping untangled

it’s what I learned in and all my kids did the same

Worms are icky!

But if you want to catch fish use live bait. Those fancy lures are designed to catch fishermen.

Go light. Lightweight rod and reel with nothing heavier than six pound test line. Use a small float about about 14-18" above hook. For the "hook" you can use a tiny lure such as a jig/twister tail or slow sinking black ant.
