I heard it was more like 1 or 2 am. Exact time doesn't matter unless you get obsessed about the date. Maybe it was still Monday in California where he died and I heard it in eastern time though.

I saw an interview with him one time where they were talking about how he was advised early in his career to change his name because nobody would take the name Petty (his real name) seriously in the rock and roll world. He refused because he was proud to be a Petty.

He used to have a shop on the other side of the road, at the end of my driveway, many years ago, when I was in first or second grade. His son, Kyle, went to school with my sister.
