I saw an interview with him one time where they were talking about how he was advised early in his career to change his name because nobody would take the name Petty (his real name) seriously in the rock and roll world. He refused because he was proud to be a Petty.

A friend of mine was at a concert (I can't remember who) and Mellencamp was seated in the audience next to him incognito. There was a hot chick with him but it wasn't the same one that was in his Jack and Diane video that was popular at the time.
