Early to mid 80's everyone watched it. I think it died sometime in the 90's. Whenever it was when they went away from music videos that was supposedly their reason to be.

It was ruined, because the recording studios wanted more & more money. MTV was a pioneer in reality TV, which everyone loves soooooo much.
